Last Weekend and Six Days To Go
Can you believe that?
I'm not really nervous. I'm more curious about how it's going to all come together on race day. I am super worried about the weather and it being too hot and too humid. I hear horror stories about 100 degrees when running through the lava field. I hear about the giant drums filled with ice water and sponges so you can grab, squeeze and go, to cool off. I hear about sea turtles and fish being able to be seen on the swim course and that kinda stuff gets me excited. I've had moments in the Stanford pool where I think about being able to see the bottom of the ocean floor and wondering if I'll ever want to come up for air.
A quick check of WeatherUnderground.com (far better than the weather channel) shows that the projected forecast is cloudy and 50% chance of rain and the temp being 68-85 degrees. You know what? This will be the only time I pray for rain. That would be the best case scenario for race day. No sun and possible spritzing. Ahhh. My age wave leaves at 7:15am and I think, but am not sure, that June's may be in a different time wave because she is, ahem, younger.
I've picked out my race day outfit. This is the top I am wearing. Then I am just wearing some kick-ass black tri shorts (for the record, I love Sugoi stuff) - it fits well and is comfortable). I wanted to go with a top that was light in color so I wasn't absorbing every square inch of sunlight o the island of Maui. This outfit can go from swim to bike to run with no additions other than my race belt and a hat.
Sunday
June picked me up at 7am and armed with a box of two dozen muffins and donuts from Dianda's we headed down to Marina Green to met some members from our Team in Training team to watch the beginning of Escape from Alcatraz. We sat along the breakwater and watched people jump off a boat and into the Bay and then make their way back to shore. We couldn't actually see them jump off ,or any actual swimmers, but we could see a line of white, which was a bunch of people kicking and swimming. We brought the muffins and donuts back to June's car because, man, those people just do not know what.is.up. How can you refuse free donuts and muffins from Dianda's!?! After that we headed over to the bike transition area and got there just as the first swimmer was running into it! I had a prime spot to look for my team members and snap some shots. When everyone was out on the run, we headed over to the finish line and had another prime spot for more teammate viewing and photo taking. Pictures here. (yes I just cut and pasted this from my other blog).
This week
I'll be busting out a swim at Stanford, tomorrow, if I can get my hands on some dramamine. Honest to god, that salt water pool makes me wretch. I can only swim for about 20-30 minutes before I am so nauseous that I have to stop. As it is, I still have to rest in between laps to calm my stomach down.
Wednesday is our last track night. Thursday I have off from work to get ready and Friday I go! Wooo!
Next up
The totally gay 5k. I'll be running with the lesbians on June 24th for pride.
The SF half marathon. I'll be running with Sue on July 30th.
The Escape from Alcatraz swim. I'll be with some USF peeps on September 2nd.
The Pacific Grove Tri. I'll be racing with June on September 9th.
The NY Marathon. (I entered the lottery and will find out if I'm in this week!) I'll be running with Sue on November 5.
When did I turn into athletic girl?

Saturday
We had a 9am run at Sports Basement presidio. June bailed because of not feeling well, so off I went alone and dreading it since I knew Sue was not gonna be there since she was racing in alcatraz the following day. It was just ok. I am so over this team and these people ignoring me. I try. I really do. The sad thing is I am going to Hawaii with most of the people who were there that morning and I don't really know any of them. I think the fact that I will have to be on a plane alone with them (June is flying out earlier) is stressing me out more than the race.
I'm a pretty slow runner and the last time Sue and I came in last one of the captains who was waiting for us to get in was all: Good. Now I can go shopping. -- Nice -- I didn't want that to happen again so I did a quick 30 minute out and back, because honestly, whatever. Afterwards, I made one last stop at Lombardi Sports. I cannot spend any more money on tri-gear. I just can't.
